What are the benefits of SMAS membership?
Benefits include:
- Scheduled SMAS observing sessions (2 per month)
- Use of Nanjemoy Creek Observatory (NCO) complex
- Access to dark sky observing site at NCEEC/NCO
- Use of SMAS equipment/reference materials
- Volunteer participation in Public and Private "Star Parties" and other outreach programs throughout Southern Maryland
- Access to Private SMAS Mail List Server a.k.a. SMAS@groups.io, with SMAS member discussions, message archives, and cyberspace storage of photos and files
- Fellowship with other amateur astronomers and the opportunity to exchange ideas and share equipment
- Help you learn about astronomy and any equipment that you already own
- Get advice on purchasing new equipment
- Periodic opportunities to purchase donated/used astronomy equipment at discounted prices
- Periodic opportunities to give and/or attend member presentations on various astronomy topics, from beginner through advanced levels
What is the policy regarding members bringing guests to SMAS observing sessions?
Members' guests are always welcome. Members are responsible for their guests and should consider notifying members via SMAS@groups.io if a large number of guests will be attending.
Is there a membership list available?
A membership list is available to members via request to the SMAS Treasurer.
How much are the membership dues?
A membership is $25.00 per individual adult or family, or $15.00 per full time student, per calendar year, but it is prorated for new members who join during the year. Visit the Join Us section of the website for more details.
How many members are in SMAS?
SMAS has an annual average membership of 45.
